SATURDAY
You have read how antennas work, you have been told how antennas work, now see how antennas work! In keeping with our hamfest theme of antennas our special guest speaker is Dale Clement. "SEE HOW ANTENNAS WORK" is a visual demonstration of various phenomena related to radio communications and different types of antennas. It has been very well received and all who have seen it say it is worth seeing again. Originally, it was a one hour program for understanding the concepts encountered in studying for the entry-level Technician Class Amateur Radio License. Topics included Frequency, Wavelength, Polarization, Dipoles, Ground Planes, and Directional Antennas (Quads and Yagis). Working antenna models were set up to receive 432 MHz radio energy across a room, detected by small light bulbs. Audience participation helped to make this a success. Use of light bulbs instead of meters is more dramatic and less mathematical, an important consideration for newcomers. 432 MHz was chosen because of available equipment (a Microwave Module Transverter), and because practical antennas are small enough to easily transport. A one-half-wavelength dipole is about 13 inches (33 cm) long, and many antennas can be easily constructed from No. 12 house-wire and wooden supports. Going to a much lower frequency would result in larger antennas and require a longer room. Going to a much higher frequency would make construction tolerances too critical, especially when accounting for the wire leads to the light bulbs. The program was well received, and was later expanded to cover topics encountered in the General Class and Extra Class Exams. Quite a few model antennas were constructed; some of these (such as the half-square and Moxon rectangle) are normally used at H. F., where they would be too large to fit in a room. Many topics will be demonstrated, including phasing and stacking of antennas. These topics can be chosen by the audience if time is limited.
Dr. LARRY PRICE,
will
give a presentation on EUROPE’S LARGEST HAMFEST, THE 3RD LARGEST IN THE WHOLE WORLD.
Come hear about the
FREIDRICHSHAFEN GERMANY HAMFEST, held in Bavaria near the picturesque City of
Augusburg, Germany.
Site of one of the largest antennas ever made, even the code name ‘WULLENWEBER” was once super-secret. This antenna was constructed by the US Army Signal Corps and was
turned over to the German government about 1995. Dr Price visited this hamfest
and this antenna in June 2011. The hamfest is attended by more that 30
countries.
You can make plans now to attend in June 2012! SPEAKER: LARRY E. PRICE, W4RA PRESIDENT EMERITUS OF ARRL and PRESIDENT EMERITUS OF IARU.
AMSAT, MARS, The Florida AM Group, QCWA and The Florida Repeater Council will all have meeting. All are open meetings and any interested party is encouraged to attend.
Ham Radio Deluxe An overview given the Managing Director of HRD Software, LLC, the new owner of HRD, where they are at now and what their plans are.
The ARRL Southeastern Division and the West Central Florida Section forum will have representatives from both the Division and Headquarters in attendance in addition to our Section officials. Visit and meet your elected and appointed officials. Ask questions and hear the latest from Headquarters.
Geoff Haines, the Section Technical wizard and published homebrew tinker will give his popular Homebrew Forum, always interesting and informative.
QCWA (Quarter Century Wireless Association) forum is open to all interested parties. What the QCWA is and what it does will be presented.
VE Exams are available from 10:00 AM to 2:00 P.M. Come on in and upgrade or bring your spouse or child in for his/her Technician license. Amateur Radio testing FCC exam fee is $15.00.
Also all day will be the DXCC/WAS/VUCC/IARU card checking. Drop off your cards and have them checked while you attend a forum, visit your favorite commercial vendor or stroll the tailgate area. The card checking may be moved to the main hall if the room is needed for forums.
ARRL ARECC Exam will be given. EC-001, Introduction to Emergency Communications. Examinees must present positive identification and must document that they have completed the two FEMA course pre-requisites, ISC-100 and IC-700.The completion dates of these pre-requisites are required on the exam session paperwork.
SUNDAY
VE Exams will be available all day on a reserved basis only in the main hall. Amateur Radio testing FCC exam fee is $15.00.
SKYWARN On Sunday afternoon both Basic and Advanced Skywarn classes are offered. Get certified or renew your existing certification.
All day DXCC/WAS/VUCC/IARU card checking will be available in the main hall. Drop off your cards and have them checked while you visit your favorite commercial vendor or stroll the tailgate area.
